Spam Filtering & Email Clients

And the link of the day (should have added it a LONG time back) is from mortaine's journal, a really nice piece on Spam Filtering. If your interested, its here.

louiswu & myself were having this discussion on Unix mail clients without /var/spool/mail support, like Mozilla & Mozilla Thunderbird. According to him such clients aren't "actual" Unix clients. Does Evolution or any of the other graphical email readers support reading mail from /var/spool/mail ?

They usually support reading mail from any mbox format files, (atleast Evolution does when I last checked it out), so you just select /var/mail/ as one of the files and it'll read mail from there.

Well then...
...Thunderbird does support mbox.

a unix client would have to read from an mbox type file (/var/spool/mail/user being one such file), and send via /usr/lib/sendmail or /usr/sbin/sendmail

Evolution does both of the above. Sylpheed doesn't. Can't remember about Thuderbird, and I don't have it at home.

oh, yes, you're right. the last time i used sylpheed, it read my /var/spool/mail/philip file, ate up all the messages, and transferred them to maildir format in my home directory.

Did the same for my sister.

You do not want to see the sed script I wrote to convert the maildir back to mbox.

Neither of us have ever used sylpheed after that.

mmmm
even mutt works this way... makes a maildir....
what's wrong with that?

Re: mmmm
no it doesn't. mutt uses mbox. even when it transfers mails to your home directory, it leaves them in mbox format. furthermore, it lets me decide whether to move mails or not.

sylpheed decides for me - and makes the wrong decision. I want all my mail to remain in /var/spool/mail/philip until I delete it from there.
