So there was a tsunami...but...

Tsunami experts could not understand why Monday's forceful earthquake off Indonesia failed to produce massive waves similar to those generated by the Dec. 26 quake that killed at least 175,000 people in the same region.

Center Director Charles McCreery said earthquakes of at least 8.0 magnitude usually generate major tsunamis."We expected some destructive tsunami with some distant destructive effects. It was surprising," he said. The latest event also demonstrated "there's a whole world of uncertainty about trying to judge a tsunami based on the earthquake data."

Rest of that here.

A major earthquake off the coast of northern Sumatra today caused a small tsunami on the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean, the US National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Rest of that here.
