OCBC Cycle Singapore 2009

It's been a while since I put down something worthwhile here, so here goes :)

Sometime in early November 2008, I bought myself my first road bike, a Giant OCR3. I began riding quite regularly and slowly increasing the distance over December.

Then I found out that there's a cycling event on February 22nd, and I thought I could take part & signed up for the 40km Challenge and prepared over the first 3 weeks of Feb.

Come raceday, I managed to finish the 40kms in 86 mins 45 seconds w0000t! :D Not bad for a first time I guess. That time put me 92nd out of 302 participants in my age group (25-29). Full result sheet is here, search for bib number 1626.

I've uploaded some photos on Flickr and a big round of thanks to my roomie, Isaq for coming along, supporting me and taking the photos :D

On a side note, I'm absolutely in love with Nokia's Sports Tracker. Absolutely kickass and I use it quite regularly. Tracked the race as well, clicky if you're interested.

I'm really starting to love cycling and here's hoping to shave off 20 mins before next year :D

Thanks! :) It was a little over 3 weeks, a good amount in December as well, but all that went to waste due to the vacation in Australia...

Freak.. That's an expensive bike.. By Indian standards :P

LOL. It's an expensive bike, by *any* standards. Except if you're into road bikes. Then it's the cheapest :p

heh.. What is special about road bikes? I mean, I always had a hero ranger (not to insult your bike by comparing it with mine). So what is different from a regular bike like hero ranger?

Err, a road bike has thin tyres and more aerodynamics built into it viz a viz the handle bars etc...to make it possible to ride with least wind resistance. I don't know what a hero ranger looks like :p but those are the two main differences (apart from the gear mechanisms) that set apart road bikes from mountain bikes...

Big differences.. Obviously the hero ranger is a cheap ass mountain bike I think.. Dunno.. Never bothered ;)

Indeed :) Road bikes are fast, which makes them more fun. You can actually feel the acceleration when you're pushing harder...

I've never had a road bike before this and now I don't think I'll have anything but road bikes :D

Danke :)

But yeah, that's really cool.. Riding 40 km.. I could never do that..
Mar. 9th, 2009 05:39 pm (UTC)
No, a year ago I couldn't do it either...and I'm not kidding you, it's all in the mind and...training.
Mar. 9th, 2009 06:28 pm (UTC)
Hmm.. I guess so.. I'm right now training to run faster and faster (treadmill) for longer and longer times. Let's see if I can maintain my enthusiasm and get to a decent speed for a decent amt of time or not ;)

Cool. Helps to have a target, like a race or a half-marathon you want to take part in. It keeps you going. Do remember treadmill != running outdoors...and will probably be more difficult outdoors.

Oh absolutely. I am not training for competition though. Only to improve fitness and to see if I can :D
Mar. 10th, 2009 03:58 am (UTC)
Yeah, I didn't do the race for the sake of competing (although I did compete a bit hehe) but the fact that I had something to take part in, helped me train for it is what I meant :) Made it that much easier to push harder..because there was an event coming up.

Wow ! 40 Kms is awesome by any measure !!

Now I should be motivated to get my road bike serviced. I stopped cycling after the last monsoon and haven't picked up since then. :(

BTW Nice userpic :)

I love Jessica Alba and the userpic is so apt :p
