Gnome 2.4.1 & Enlightenment

I've got addicted to Gnome 2.4... seems I can't live without it. Enlightenment took about 30 mins to install & looks exactly the same as I last remember it (somewhere in 2000). Gnome on the other hand took about 14 hours... & well, no second thoughts, it does rock.

I've blown up atleast 250 MB plus in bandwidth this month already...so I've got to be careful. To top it all off, Mozilla Firebird & Thunderbird sources for Gentoo are like 30 MB each (Aaaaarrrrggghhhhhh) so I don't think i'll be getting them. On the other hand, I can find a PORTAGE_BINHOST & install the binaries from there. Or make it install the binaries in my /distfiles.

Battlemaster looks Great on Mozilla. On the other hand, LJ looks sucky in Mozilla & anyway the bottomline is I am not going to use anything other than Firebird & Thunderbird. Also for some reason I can't access my fat partition as a user, it says "Permission Denied". Works on FC 1 fine. Another pissing off bit with Gentoo is that say I want logjam, & logjam needs a few old things (of which newer versions are already installed) it insists on installing the older version as well. I guess that does make sense, & hey Gentoo wasn't designed with India's bandwidth limitations in mind. xmms needs about 10 other things as well... & had a few errors with sound that I'll have to rectify.

Bottomline : Gentoo works, UI is up as well. Tweaking stuff needs to be done. Maybe I'll have to leave Gentoo as it is for now & work on it after the exams..... or maybe not ! ;)

With a little work, you can have beautiful fonts in Mozilla working too. Have you emerged xfs? This may help. And this, if you haven't looked already. The Gentoo Forums are a good source of tweaks too!

As for the permission denied, add umask=000 to each FAT partition in /etc/fstab... Example:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/c vfat rw,umask=000 0 0

Thanks :) I had xfs but hadn't started it!!! Duh. The FAT thingy I figured out pretty soon & added the umask. Off to test xfs now ;)
